Pocahontas Fuel Company opens the first store in Pocahontas.

One hundred twelve miners were killed when coal dust in the Pocahontas mine known as Laurel Mint caught fire and ignited. The mine was flooded to extinguish the fire. The mine was left sealed until April 1884, when the miners’ bodies were recovered, identified, and buried.
